JLR cyber-attack caused UK car production to hit 70-year low for September

By Eric November 4, 2025

In a striking revelation, the UK automotive industry reported its lowest production figures for September since 1952, a stark indicator of ongoing challenges within the sector. According to the latest statistics released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), only 63,000 vehicles were produced in September 2023. This figure not only highlights a significant decline compared to previous years but also underscores the persistent issues that have plagued the industry, including supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decline is particularly alarming as it marks the lowest output for any September since records began, even taking into account the production halts experienced during the pandemic.

The drop in vehicle production is attributed to various factors, including the global semiconductor crisis that has hampered manufacturers’ ability to meet demand. This situation has forced many automakers to slow down or halt production lines, leading to reduced inventory and, consequently, fewer vehicles available for sale. For instance, major manufacturers like Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover have reported significant production cuts as they grapple with these supply chain issues. Furthermore, the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is also reshaping production strategies, with many companies investing heavily in new technologies and infrastructure, which may temporarily impact overall output.

Despite these challenges, industry experts remain cautiously optimistic about the future. The UK government has introduced several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the automotive sector, including investments in EV infrastructure and incentives for manufacturers to transition to greener technologies. As the industry adapts to these changes, it is hoped that production levels will gradually recover. However, the current figures serve as a stark reminder of the hurdles that lie ahead, emphasizing the need for continued innovation and resilience within the UK automotive landscape.
