G.M. Will Cut 1,750 Jobs in Electric Vehicle Business

By Eric November 4, 2025

In 2021, General Motors (GM) made a significant leap into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the introduction of the electric GMC Hummer, produced at their state-of-the-art Factory Zero plant in Detroit. This facility, formerly known as the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, underwent a massive transformation to become GM’s flagship for electric vehicle production. The reimagining of this plant is part of GM’s broader strategy to transition towards a more sustainable future, aiming to produce a range of electric vehicles that cater to different segments of the automotive market. The GMC Hummer EV, a modern reincarnation of the iconic Hummer brand, symbolizes not just a shift in GM’s product lineup but also a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing innovative technologies.

The GMC Hummer EV stands out with its impressive performance capabilities, boasting a remarkable 1,000 horsepower and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just three seconds. Its design pays homage to the rugged aesthetics of its gas-guzzling predecessor while incorporating cutting-edge technology, including an advanced battery system and features like CrabWalk, which allows the vehicle to move diagonally, enhancing off-road maneuverability. With a starting price around $112,595, the Hummer EV targets a niche market of luxury electric truck enthusiasts. Additionally, GM’s investment in Factory Zero, which includes a $2.2 billion renovation, underscores their commitment to EV production, aiming to produce a variety of electric models, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the electric version of the GMC Sierra.

As the automotive industry faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions and adapt to consumer preferences for sustainable options, GM’s pivot towards electric vehicles is a strategic response to these challenges. The launch of the GMC Hummer EV not only positions GM as a key player in the EV market but also reflects a broader trend among traditional automakers embracing electrification. With plans to be carbon neutral by 2040, GM’s ambitious goals, including the introduction of 30 new electric models globally by 2025, highlight the urgency and importance of this transition. The electric GMC Hummer, rolling off the assembly line in Detroit, represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of the automotive industry, showcasing the potential of electric vehicles to combine performance, luxury, and sustainability.
