Nintendo is raising its Switch 2 sales expectations

By Eric November 4, 2025

Nintendo’s latest gaming console, the Switch 2, has achieved remarkable success, surpassing 10 million units sold within just a few months of its launch in June. This impressive performance has prompted the company to revise its sales forecast upward by over 25%, now anticipating sales of 19 million units by March 2026, compared to an earlier estimate of 15 million. In its latest earnings report covering the period from April 1 to September 30, Nintendo revealed that 10.36 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold, with 4.54 million of those sales occurring in the most recent earnings quarter. Additionally, the console’s game sales have also been robust, with 20.62 million games sold to date, leading to a slight increase in the game sales forecast from 45 million to 48 million.

The surge in sales is reflected in Nintendo’s financial performance, which saw a staggering 110% increase in revenue, soaring to ¥1,099.5 billion (approximately $7.1 billion) for the half-year period, up from ¥523.2 billion ($3.4 billion) the previous year. The company has also raised its end-of-year sales forecast to ¥2,250 billion (around $14.6 billion), taking into account US tariff measures. The Switch 2’s rapid sales growth has made it the fastest-selling game console of all time, while the original Switch continues to perform well, nearing 154.01 million lifetime sales. This places it just shy of the Nintendo DS’s total of 154.02 million, making the Switch a strong contender for the title of Nintendo’s best-selling console. In stark contrast, the Wii U, which sold only 13.7 million units throughout its entire lifecycle, highlights the Switch 2’s exceptional market reception, suggesting that it will easily surpass that figure before its first anniversary.

As Nintendo continues to innovate and capture the gaming market, the success of the Switch 2 not only reinforces the company’s position within the industry but also sets the stage for exciting developments in the future. The combination of robust hardware sales and a growing library of games indicates a promising trajectory for Nintendo, as it aims to reclaim the title of the best-selling console of all time, currently held by Sony’s PlayStation 2. With the gaming landscape evolving rapidly, the Switch 2’s performance will be closely monitored by both fans and industry analysts alike.

.

The Japanese gaming giant reports that 10.36 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold so far following its launch in June, with 4.54 million sales falling under its latest earnings period. 20.62 million Switch 2 games have also been sold since launch, though Nintendo has only raised its Switch 2 game forecast from 45 million to 48 million.

The combined hardware and software sales are driving a 110 percent surge in revenue, which increased to ¥1,099.5 billion (around $7.1 billion) between April and September, compared to ¥523.2 billion (around $3.4 billion) for the same period last year. Nintendo also increased its end-of-year sales forecast to ¥2,250 billion (around $14.6 billion), and said it’s taken US tariff measures into consideration for these revisions.

While the Switch 2 is the
fastest-selling game console of all time
, the first Switch console is also still creeping up in sales. The Switch has now hit 154.01 million lifetime sales,
just shy
of the 154.02 million total units sold for the DS, which still reigns as Nintendo’s most successful console. After dethroning the DS, the Switch then just needs to surpass 160 million sales to become the best-selling console of all time — a record set by Sony’s PlayStation 2 last year.

By comparison, the Wii U sold just 13.7 million units over its entire lifetime, a figure that the Switch 2 is pretty much guaranteed to surpass before its first birthday.
