Presidents once avoided shutdown travel. This term, Trump has been a frequent flier

By Eric November 2, 2025

In the first month of the government shutdown, President Donald Trump was notably absent from Washington, D.C., spending a significant portion of his time away from the capital. Specifically, he spent all or part of 14 days outside the city, primarily engaging in golf outings in Virginia. This period of absence has raised questions about his commitment to resolving the ongoing impasse that has led to the shutdown, which began on December 22, 2018, and was primarily fueled by disagreements over funding for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Critics have pointed out that Trump’s frequent departures from the capital during such a critical time may undermine his leadership and ability to negotiate effectively. While he was away, the shutdown continued to affect hundreds of thousands of federal employees who were furloughed or required to work without pay. The economic impact of the shutdown was felt across various sectors, with services such as national parks and museums closing, and many government functions grinding to a halt. Despite these challenges, Trump maintained a focus on his border security agenda, emphasizing the need for wall funding as a non-negotiable demand.

The juxtaposition of Trump’s leisure activities against the backdrop of a national crisis has sparked public debate about presidential responsibilities during emergencies. Some supporters argue that the president deserves time to recharge, while opponents contend that his absence sends a troubling message about his priorities. As the shutdown dragged on, it became increasingly clear that the stalemate would require significant political maneuvering from all parties involved to reach a resolution, highlighting the complexities of governance in a polarized political climate.
