Trump urges GOP to ‘end the shutdown’ by going nuclear on Senate filibuster
In a recent late-night post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump called on Republicans to eliminate the filibuster as a means to resolve the ongoing government shutdown, which has now entered its fourth week. Trump’s remarks come after his return from an Asia trip and highlight his frustration with the current political stalemate. He pointed out that Democrats attempted to abolish the filibuster during their control of Congress and the White House, but were thwarted by Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, who have since left the Democratic Party to become independents. Trump’s revival of the “nuclear option” underscores his belief that Republicans should leverage their current congressional power to push through their agenda and end the shutdown.
Trump’s post also featured a scathing critique of Democrats, whom he described as “crazed lunatics” afflicted with “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He accused them of seeking to redirect funds from the American healthcare system to support undocumented immigrants, whom he characterized as unworthy recipients. The former president praised Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, while expressing his discontent with the ongoing impasse, which has seen both parties trading blame for the shutdown. He emphasized that if Republicans were to act decisively by abolishing the filibuster, they could quickly resolve the shutdown crisis, a sentiment he believes Democrats would embrace if they regained power.
Trump’s reference to the filibuster draws on historical context, particularly the 2013 decision by then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for most executive branch and judicial nominees, a move that Trump argues was a strategic advantage for Democrats. He contended that Republicans should adopt a similar strategy to advance their legislative goals and secure what he termed “the best Judges” and “the best U.S. Attorneys.” By calling for the elimination of the filibuster, Trump is urging his party to take bold steps that he believes are necessary to navigate the current political landscape and restore government operations.

Trump added that Republicans, who now hold control of Congress and the White House, should play their “Trump card” and go for the “nuclear option.”
“Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” he wrote.
Trump added that Democrats “fought so hard” to end the filibuster under Biden but failed. Now, he argued,
Republicans should abolish the procedure
to advance their own agenda and end the shutdown.
“[I]f we did what we should be doing, it would immediately end this ridiculous, country-destroying shutdown,” Trump said.
He added that Democrats would “do it on their first day” if they regained power.
“In addition to all of the other things we would get, such as the best Judges, the best U.S. Attorneys, the best of everything, this was a concept from years ago of then President Barack Hussein Obama and former Majority Leader Harry Reid in order to take advantage of the Republicans. Now I want to do it in order to take advantage of the Democrats,” Trump added.
The president was referring to former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s 2013 decision to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for most executive branch and judicial nominees. The Senate, with a Democrat majority, voted 52–48 in 2013 to eliminate the 60-vote requirement.
