Apple may be forced to allow rival app stores in UK

By Eric October 30, 2025

In a recent report, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised significant concerns regarding the dominance of major tech giants, specifically Apple and Google, in the smartphone market. This revelation comes as part of an ongoing investigation into how these companies influence competition and consumer choice within the digital ecosystem. The CMA’s findings indicate that the duopoly of Apple and Google not only stifles competition but also limits innovation and the potential for new entrants in the smartphone sector.

The CMA’s analysis highlights that Apple and Google collectively control nearly 99% of the mobile operating system market, with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android being the only two viable platforms for smartphone users. This near-total control enables both companies to impose their terms on app developers and consumers alike. For instance, the report points out that high fees charged by these companies for app distribution can lead to increased prices for consumers and reduced revenue for developers, particularly smaller ones who struggle to compete in such a constrained marketplace. The authority emphasizes that this situation hampers innovation, as new players find it increasingly difficult to gain a foothold in a market dominated by these tech giants.

The CMA’s findings are part of a broader conversation about the need for regulatory reform in the tech industry. The agency is advocating for measures that would enhance competition, such as mandating that smartphone manufacturers allow users to install apps from third-party sources without restrictions. This would not only empower consumers with more choices but also encourage developers to innovate and create new applications that can thrive outside the confines of the existing app stores. As discussions about digital market regulations continue to evolve, the CMA’s report serves as a critical reminder of the challenges posed by concentrated market power in the tech sector, and the urgent need for policies that foster a more competitive landscape for the benefit of consumers and developers alike.
