For over 16 seasons and more than 300 episodes, *Bob’s Burgers* has captivated audiences with its unique blend of humor, heart, and memorable characters, leading to a passionate and engaged fanbase. This community thrives on various forms of expression, from elaborate cosplays to TikTok videos that lip-sync iconic scenes. Fans often dive deep into the show’s intricate details, showcasing their dedication to the animated sitcom created by Loren Bouchard. In a recent *Mashable* interview, Bouchard discussed the show’s evolution and the significance of its early fans, who played a crucial role in its success.
One of the more intriguing aspects of *Bob’s Burgers* is the offbeat manner in which the Belcher family eats tacos—starting from the top down. During the interview with *Mashable*’s Kristy Puchko, Bouchard revealed that he had never been asked about this peculiar eating style, despite years of promoting the show. The origin of this quirky habit was traced back to Season 5, Episode 1, titled “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl.” In this episode, the animation team initially storyboarded a scene featuring burgers but later switched to tacos, resulting in the unusual top-down taco-eating animation that fans have come to love. This revelation not only highlights the creative process behind the show but also underscores the fans’ ability to notice and theorize about even the smallest details.
The *Bob’s Burgers* fandom has embraced the show’s eccentricities, including its characters and their quirks, such as Bob being recognized as a “bicon” by queer fans. This sense of community is further reinforced by the show’s consistent humor and relatability, making it a staple in animated television. As fans continue to celebrate the series and its unique storytelling, *Bob’s Burgers* remains available for streaming on Hulu, ensuring that both new viewers and long-time fans can enjoy the Belcher family’s antics and the delightful chaos of their burger joint.

In

with Bouchard, he and Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko talked about the show’s growth, what drives him,
how the character of Marshmallow has evolved
, Bob being embraced by queer fans as a bicon, and of course how the Belcher kids eat tacos. Much to Puchko’s surprise, even after 15 years of promoting
Bob’s Burgers
on junkets and numerous conventions, Bouchard hadn’t been asked about why the Belchers eat their tacos from the top down.
In case you missed it, here’s the exchange from Say More:
While Puchko laid out the most popular fan theories, Bouchard admitted he didn’t know the origin of this Belcher eccentricity, but promised he’d look into it. Well, he’s gotten back to us.
Here is Bouchard’s official follow-up to the taco question:
“This first happened in ‘Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl’ and was an accident we decided to keep. As many suspected, we boarded the scene with burgers, then changed the prop to tacos so we ended up with the odd-looking ‘top down taco eating’ animation.”
This means the idiosyncratic taco-eating dates back to Season 5, episode 1, where Gene and Courtney had dueling musicals based on ’80s hit movies,
Die Hard
and
Working Girl
. It’s a sensational episode in many respects, including the clever practical effects for
Die Hard
‘s most iconic action scenes, and now, also the start of the Belchers eating tacos top-down.
Shout out to all those fans in our comments who speculated correctly, and a special cheers to those of you who insist top-down is the best way to eat a taco. You, Gene, Tina, and Louise clearly have a deep connection.
