Maduro says the real reason for Trump’s Venezuela fixation is oil – is he right?

By Eric December 8, 2025

In recent months, Venezuela has found itself at the center of escalating tensions between the United States and its own government, led by President Nicolás Maduro. The backdrop of this conflict is Venezuela’s staggering oil reserves, which account for nearly a fifth of the world’s known supplies, making it a critical player in global energy markets. Maduro has accused the U.S. of using military buildups in the Caribbean as a guise for its true intentions—seizing control of Venezuela’s vast oil resources. This assertion comes amidst a significant increase in U.S. military presence in the region, which includes airstrikes that have reportedly resulted in over 80 fatalities, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact of such operations.

The U.S. State Department, however, refutes Maduro’s claims, framing the military actions as part of a broader initiative to combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean. This narrative has been met with skepticism by many observers, who point to the strategic implications of Venezuela’s oil wealth in the context of rising global energy demands and the geopolitical competition for resources. The U.S. military’s increased activity, which includes naval deployments and aerial surveillance, signals a heightened focus on the region, particularly as the Biden administration aims to counteract the influence of adversaries such as Russia and China in Latin America.

As the situation unfolds, it raises critical questions about the intersection of military action, drug policy, and energy security. The international community is closely watching how these dynamics will evolve, especially given the potential repercussions for Venezuela, a country already grappling with economic turmoil and humanitarian crises. With Maduro’s regime facing both internal and external pressures, the stakes are high, and the implications of U.S. military strategy in the Caribbean could reverberate far beyond the region, impacting global oil markets and international relations.
