Ilhan Omar says Trump’s anti-Somali tirade ‘completely disgusting’

By Eric December 8, 2025

In a recent appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar passionately defended the Somali community in her Minnesota district, condemning former President Donald Trump’s derogatory remarks where he referred to them as “garbage.” Omar, who is a Somali-born Democrat and a prominent voice in Congress, expressed her outrage over Trump’s comments, emphasizing that they are not just words but a reflection of a broader issue of dehumanization and hate. “These are Americans that he is calling ‘garbage,’” she stated, highlighting the disrespect and harm such language inflicts on individuals and communities. Omar’s remarks come in the wake of Trump’s ongoing pattern of inflammatory rhetoric towards immigrants and minority groups, which has sparked widespread concern among lawmakers and advocates for civil rights.

Omar underscored the potential consequences of such hateful rhetoric, warning that it could incite dangerous actions among those who might take the president’s words to heart. She articulated a critical point about the responsibility that public figures hold in shaping public discourse and the impact their words can have on societal attitudes and behaviors. This sentiment resonates with many who fear that incendiary language can lead to real-world violence and discrimination. Omar’s defense of her community is not just a personal stance; it reflects a larger movement among lawmakers and activists who are calling for more respectful and inclusive dialogue in politics. By addressing these issues head-on, Omar aims to foster a sense of unity and resilience among the Somali community and to challenge the toxic narratives that seek to undermine their dignity and rights as Americans.
