The United Nations Ocean Decade: A catalyst for international collaboration enhancing ocean monitoring and data | Science

By Eric December 5, 2025

In a landmark move to underscore the importance of ocean conservation and sustainable use, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the decade from 2021 to 2030 as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This initiative, driven by the vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want,” aims to harness interdisciplinary ocean research to address pressing challenges facing our oceans. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is at the forefront of this global effort, seeking to catalyze transformative solutions that will not only enhance our understanding of ocean ecosystems but also bolster sustainable development across the globe.

The Decade of Ocean Science emphasizes the critical role oceans play in supporting life on Earth, influencing global economies, and contributing to human well-being. With the oceans covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, they are vital for food security, climate regulation, and biodiversity. However, they face numerous threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change, which jeopardize marine life and the livelihoods of millions who depend on ocean resources. Through improved knowledge, innovation, and governance, the Decade aims to provide the necessary tools and data to inform policies that protect ocean health while promoting sustainable practices. For instance, initiatives under this framework will focus on enhancing marine research capabilities, fostering international collaboration, and developing innovative technologies to monitor ocean health and resources.

As part of this ambitious agenda, the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14, which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources. By prioritizing ocean science, the initiative seeks to empower nations and communities to make informed decisions that benefit both people and the planet. This collaborative approach not only aims to safeguard marine ecosystems but also to ensure that future generations can enjoy the myriad benefits that healthy oceans provide. Through this decade-long commitment, the global community is poised to make significant strides in protecting our oceans and fostering a sustainable future.

In recognition of the ocean’s essential role in supporting life, the economy, and human well-being, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2017 declared 2021 to 2030 the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Under the vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want” and the mission of catalyzing transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, a global effort is being undertaken by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This effort seeks to drive interdisciplinary ocean research to generate the knowledge, data, and tools needed to inform policy and support the Sustainable Development Goals through improved knowledge, innovation, and governance.
