High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric December 4, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation over the past five decades, proving to be an efficient and effective alternative to traditional rail systems and air travel. Originating in Japan with the Shinkansen, which debuted in 1964, high-speed rail (HSR) has expanded globally, with countries like France, Spain, China, and Germany developing extensive networks. These trains, capable of reaching speeds exceeding 300 kilometers per hour (about 186 miles per hour), offer significant advantages, including reduced travel times, lower carbon emissions, and the ability to alleviate congestion on roadways and at airports. For instance, the TGV in France has transformed travel between major cities, slashing journey times and making train travel a competitive option against flying.

The economic impact of high-speed trains is profound, not only enhancing connectivity between urban centers but also stimulating regional economies. They have facilitated business travel and tourism, making cities more accessible and attractive to visitors. In China, the high-speed rail network has expanded rapidly, with over 38,000 kilometers (about 23,600 miles) of track, connecting vast regions and contributing to the country’s economic growth. Additionally, HSR has been linked to job creation in construction, operations, and maintenance, further underscoring its value beyond mere transportation. Countries investing in high-speed rail infrastructure are also making strides toward sustainability, as trains emit significantly less greenhouse gas per passenger compared to cars and planes, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Despite the clear benefits, the implementation of high-speed rail systems is not without challenges. The initial investment is substantial, often requiring government funding and long-term planning. Moreover, projects can face opposition from local communities concerned about noise, land use, and environmental impacts. Nevertheless, as nations grapple with increasing populations and the need for sustainable transport solutions, high-speed trains remain a vital component of future infrastructure development. With ongoing advancements in technology and growing public support for eco-friendly transport options, the next 50 years may see high-speed rail become an even more integral part of global transportation networks, connecting people and places like never before.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
