How will Japan’s defences evolve under its hawkish new leader?

By Eric December 4, 2025

In a recent address, Japan’s Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Takaichi Sanae, emphasized the need for a significant enhancement in Japan’s national security strategy, advocating for larger budgets, improved intelligence capabilities, and a robust arms industry. This call comes amid escalating regional tensions, particularly concerning North Korea’s missile tests and China’s assertive military posture in the Asia-Pacific region. Takaichi’s proposals are part of a broader push by the Japanese government to redefine its defense policies, moving away from its post-World War II pacifist stance to a more proactive military approach.

Takaichi highlighted that Japan’s defense budget must increase substantially to meet these emerging threats. Currently, Japan’s defense spending hovers around 1% of its GDP, which is relatively low compared to other nations facing similar security challenges. She argued that a more substantial budget would allow for the recruitment of additional personnel, the acquisition of advanced technologies, and enhanced training for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. Furthermore, Takaichi pointed out the importance of bolstering the nation’s intelligence capabilities, which she believes are crucial for effective decision-making and strategic planning in an increasingly complex security environment.

Additionally, Takaichi’s vision includes fostering a stronger arms industry within Japan, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign military equipment and stimulate domestic production. This push aligns with the government’s broader strategy to not only strengthen Japan’s defense posture but also to contribute to regional security through partnerships with allies, particularly the United States. By advocating for these changes, Takaichi is positioning Japan to take a more assertive role on the global stage, ensuring that it is prepared to respond effectively to any threats while maintaining peace and stability in the region. As Japan navigates this pivotal moment in its defense policy, Takaichi’s proposals underscore a significant shift towards a more militarily capable and self-reliant nation.
