South Korea joins growing number of countries imposing sanctions on Prince Group as probe into Cambodian scams widens

By Eric November 30, 2025

In a groundbreaking move, Seoul has announced its first independent sanctions aimed at combating transnational crime, marking a significant milestone in South Korea’s approach to international law enforcement. These sanctions, described as the “largest single sanction measure in history,” reflect the country’s growing commitment to tackling global criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and cybercrime. The decision comes in the wake of increasing concerns over the impact of these crimes on national security and public safety, prompting the South Korean government to take a more assertive stance in the international arena.

The sanctions target a wide array of individuals and entities involved in transnational crime, signaling a robust strategy to disrupt criminal networks that operate across borders. For instance, the measures include asset freezes and travel bans on key figures identified as major players in these illicit activities. By implementing these sanctions, South Korea aims not only to hold accountable those who facilitate crime but also to deter future offenses by creating a more hostile environment for criminal enterprises. This proactive approach aligns with global efforts to enhance cooperation among nations in the fight against crime, showcasing Seoul’s dedication to contributing to a safer international community.

Moreover, these sanctions are expected to foster stronger partnerships with other countries as South Korea seeks to collaborate on intelligence sharing and joint operations against transnational crime. The move has been welcomed by various international organizations and law enforcement agencies, which view it as a crucial step towards a unified global response to crime that knows no borders. As South Korea continues to navigate its role on the world stage, these sanctions not only enhance its credibility as a responsible member of the international community but also underscore the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations.

The measures are Seoul’s first independent sanctions regarding transnational crime and the “largest single sanction measure in history.”
