My not-so-favorite year | Science

By Eric November 29, 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, the American scientific community finds itself navigating one of its most tumultuous years, marked by significant changes under the second Trump administration. This period has seen sweeping cuts to critical funding initiatives that support various scientific endeavors, from climate research to public health. The administration’s prioritization of deregulation and budget reductions has resulted in a stark decrease in federal grants, jeopardizing numerous projects that are vital for advancing knowledge and addressing pressing societal challenges. For instance, programs dedicated to studying climate change and its impacts have faced severe budget constraints, leading to a slowdown in research that is essential for developing strategies to combat this global crisis.

In addition to funding cuts, the political climate has fostered an environment where scientific integrity is often questioned. Researchers have reported increased scrutiny and pressure regarding their findings, particularly in fields that intersect with political agendas, such as environmental science and healthcare. The administration’s stance on various scientific issues has led to a chilling effect, where scientists may hesitate to pursue certain lines of inquiry for fear of backlash or funding loss. Notably, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have been significantly affected, with many researchers scrambling to secure alternative funding sources or pivot their research agendas to align more closely with governmental priorities.

As we reflect on 2025, it is crucial to recognize the resilience and adaptability of the scientific community in the face of these challenges. Many researchers are finding innovative ways to collaborate with private sector partners and non-profit organizations to sustain their work. Furthermore, grassroots movements advocating for science funding and policy reform have gained momentum, highlighting a growing public awareness of the importance of scientific research in informing policy and improving lives. The year has underscored the vital role that science plays in addressing complex issues, and as we look ahead, there is hope that a renewed commitment to supporting scientific inquiry will emerge, regardless of the political landscape.
