What’s the big deal about AI data centres?

By Eric October 28, 2025

As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) continues to surge, significant investments are pouring into data centers designed to support this burgeoning technology. The increasing reliance on AI for various applications, from machine learning to deep learning, has led to a dramatic rise in the need for robust data storage and processing capabilities. Analysts predict that the global data center market could reach a staggering $100 billion by 2025, driven primarily by the requirements of AI workloads. However, the high costs associated with building and maintaining these facilities raise questions about their economic viability and sustainability.

One of the primary reasons data centers for AI are so expensive is the advanced infrastructure they require. Unlike traditional data centers, AI-specific centers need to accommodate high-performance computing systems that can handle immense data processing tasks. This includes specialized hardware like Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are essential for training complex AI models. For instance, companies like NVIDIA and Google have invested heavily in designing chips optimized for AI, leading to increased costs associated with cutting-edge technology. Additionally, the energy consumption of these data centers is a significant factor; AI workloads can be power-intensive, leading to higher operational costs. The cooling systems necessary to maintain optimal temperatures for these high-performance machines also contribute to the overall expense.

Moreover, the location and construction of data centers add to the financial burden. Real estate prices in tech hubs are notoriously high, and building a facility that meets the necessary specifications requires considerable investment in both land and construction. Furthermore, with the growing emphasis on sustainability, many companies are investing in green technologies to power their data centers, which, while beneficial for the environment, often come with a higher upfront cost. For example, companies are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources to power their operations, which, although more sustainable, can be initially more expensive than traditional energy sources. As AI technology continues to evolve and expand, understanding the financial implications of its supporting infrastructure will be crucial for stakeholders in the tech industry.
