Trump to pardon ex-Honduras leader serving drug trafficking sentence in US

By Eric November 29, 2025

In a controversial move that has sparked significant debate, former President Donald Trump announced on Friday his intention to grant a full pardon to Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras currently serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States. Hernández was convicted in 2024 of accepting millions of dollars in bribes to protect cocaine shipments, as well as for weapons charges. His conviction was based on a comprehensive investigation that revealed his deep ties to drug trafficking organizations, which allegedly flourished under his administration. Trump’s claim that Hernández has been “treated very harshly and unfairly” has raised eyebrows, especially given the serious nature of the charges against him.

Hernández’s presidency, which lasted from 2014 to 2022, was marred by allegations of corruption and collusion with drug cartels. During his time in office, he was accused of facilitating a climate of impunity for drug traffickers, which contributed to the worsening violence and instability in Honduras. The U.S. government has long viewed Hernández’s regime as a significant player in the drug trade, leading to his eventual indictment and conviction. Trump’s announcement comes amidst a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over his own legal troubles and a desire to rally support among his base, particularly those who favor a more lenient approach to criminal justice.

The implications of this potential pardon are profound, not only for U.S.-Honduran relations but also for the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in Central America. Critics argue that pardoning a leader convicted of such serious crimes sends a dangerous message about accountability and justice, undermining efforts to combat corruption and drug-related violence in the region. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact both Hernández’s future and the broader political landscape in the United States and Central America.
