High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 28, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation across the globe over the past five decades, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional rail and air travel. Originating in Japan with the Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” which debuted in 1964, high-speed rail (HSR) has expanded to numerous countries, including France, Germany, Spain, and China. These trains can reach speeds of over 300 km/h (186 mph), significantly reducing travel times between major cities. For instance, the journey from Paris to Lyon, which once took over four hours by conventional train, can now be completed in just two hours thanks to the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse). This remarkable speed not only enhances convenience for travelers but also stimulates economic growth by improving accessibility to urban centers.

The benefits of high-speed trains extend beyond mere speed. They are seen as a sustainable alternative to air travel, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and lessening the environmental impact of transportation. In countries like Japan and France, HSR has become an integral part of the national transport infrastructure, encouraging a shift from car and air travel to rail. For example, in 2020, the French government reported that the TGV network prevented the emission of approximately 1.5 million tons of CO2 by substituting car and plane journeys. Moreover, high-speed trains often boast modern amenities such as spacious seating, onboard Wi-Fi, and dining options, enhancing the overall travel experience.

China has emerged as a leader in high-speed rail development, with a network that spans over 38,000 kilometers (23,600 miles) and continues to grow. The country’s commitment to HSR is evident in its ambitious projects, such as the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which covers 1,318 kilometers (819 miles) in just under five hours. This rapid expansion has not only transformed domestic travel but also positioned China as a major player in the global rail industry, exporting its technology and expertise to other nations. As high-speed trains continue to gain popularity, they promise to play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation, offering a glimpse into a more connected and sustainable world.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
