Deepti commands big fee but Healy unsold in WPL

By Eric November 28, 2025

In a significant development for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has made headlines by rejoining the UP Warriorz for a substantial sum of 3.2 crore Indian Rupees, which is approximately £272,000. This move underscores the growing financial competitiveness of women’s cricket in India, particularly in the wake of the WPL’s increasing popularity and the impressive performances of its players. Deepti’s return comes just shy of the record 3.4 crore Indian Rupees that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru invested in acquiring India opener Smriti Mandhana during the 2023 auction, highlighting the escalating market value of top-tier female cricketers in the country.

Deepti Sharma, known for her exceptional skills both with the bat and ball, has been a pivotal figure in Indian women’s cricket. Her ability to contribute in all facets of the game makes her a valuable asset for any team. In the previous WPL season, she showcased her talent with consistent performances, further solidifying her reputation as one of the leading all-rounders in the sport. The UP Warriorz, who finished third in the inaugural season of the WPL, are clearly banking on Deepti’s experience and skill set to elevate their chances in the upcoming season. This investment not only reflects the team’s ambition but also the broader trend of increasing financial commitments in women’s cricket, as franchises recognize the potential for growth and fan engagement in this dynamic arena.

The competitive nature of the WPL is indicative of a broader shift in women’s sports, where players are beginning to receive recognition and remuneration that reflect their talent and contributions. The substantial sums being paid for players like Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana signal a new era in women’s cricket, where female athletes are increasingly seen as marketable stars capable of drawing significant audiences. As the WPL gears up for its next season, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on how these investments translate into performance on the field, and how they contribute to the overall growth of women’s cricket in India. With players like Deepti at the forefront, the future looks promising for the league and its role in promoting female athletes in the sport.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma returns to UP Warriorz for 3.2 Indian crore (approx £272,000), just short of the record 3.4 Indian crore Royal Challengers Bengaluru paid for India opener Smirti Mandhana in 2023.
