Trump Administration Will No Longer Commemorate World AIDS Day

By Eric November 28, 2025

On December 1, 2024, the White House South Lawn became a poignant gathering place for activists, advocates, and supporters as they came together to commemorate World AIDS Day. This annual observance is dedicated to raising awareness about the AIDS epidemic, honoring those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, and promoting education and prevention efforts. This year’s event was particularly significant as it marked over four decades since the first cases of AIDS were reported in the United States. The White House, under the Biden administration, has made it a priority to address health disparities and provide resources for those affected by HIV/AIDS, reflecting a renewed commitment to combating the epidemic.

During the ceremony, President Joe Biden delivered a heartfelt address, emphasizing the importance of continued support and funding for HIV/AIDS research and treatment. He highlighted the progress made in recent years, such as advancements in antiretroviral therapy and the increased availability of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which has proven effective in preventing HIV transmission. The President also acknowledged the challenges that remain, particularly in marginalized communities disproportionately affected by the disease. He called for a collective effort to eliminate stigma and ensure equitable access to healthcare services. Notably, the event featured personal testimonies from individuals living with HIV, who shared their stories of resilience and the ongoing fight for dignity and healthcare access.

The gathering also served as a platform for various organizations and community leaders to showcase their initiatives aimed at prevention, education, and support for those living with HIV/AIDS. Attendees were encouraged to participate in local outreach programs and advocacy efforts, reinforcing the message that the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from over. The event concluded with a candlelight vigil, symbolizing hope and remembrance, as participants lit candles in honor of those who have succumbed to the disease. The White House’s observance of World AIDS Day in 2024 illustrated a commitment not only to remembrance but also to action, fostering a sense of community and solidarity in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.
