US warns Russia not to touch American nuclear technology at Ukrainian nuclear plant

By Eric November 28, 2025

In a significant development amidst ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe, the U.S. Department of Energy has issued a stern warning to Russia regarding sensitive nuclear technology housed at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine. This warning comes in the form of a letter directed to Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding this technology which is critical not only to Ukraine’s energy security but also to broader regional stability. The letter, which surfaced recently, underscores the heightened concern over potential Russian military actions that could jeopardize the integrity of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict that began with Russia’s invasion in 2022.

The U.S. has been closely monitoring the situation, given Ukraine’s reliance on its nuclear power infrastructure. The country operates several nuclear power plants, with the largest being the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been a focal point of international concern since it came under Russian control early in the conflict. The letter from the Department of Energy highlights the critical nature of the technology involved, which includes advanced systems necessary for the safe operation of nuclear reactors. The U.S. has reiterated that any interference or attack on these facilities could lead to catastrophic consequences, not just for Ukraine but potentially for neighboring countries as well, given the risk of a nuclear incident.

This warning is part of a broader strategy by the U.S. to deter Russian aggression and protect Ukraine’s sovereignty. The letter serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of power in the region and the potential global repercussions of any missteps. As the situation evolves, the U.S. is expected to continue its support for Ukraine, both militarily and in terms of safeguarding its critical infrastructure. This incident underscores the complexities of nuclear safety in conflict zones and the international community’s role in preventing nuclear proliferation and ensuring the protection of sensitive technologies.

The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy sent to Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy firm Rosatom last month.
