How to lower America’s soaring health-care costs

By Eric November 27, 2025

In the current political landscape, a significant focus has been placed on populist schemes that promise to address immediate concerns of the electorate. However, as politicians engage in these debates, they often overlook the profound and impactful changes occurring right before their eyes. These changes, while less sensational than populist rhetoric, have the potential to reshape society in meaningful ways. For instance, advancements in technology, shifts in labor markets, and evolving social norms are all factors that demand attention and thoughtful policy responses. Instead of merely appealing to the masses with catchy slogans and quick fixes, policymakers should prioritize understanding these underlying trends and their implications for the future.

One glaring example of this oversight is the ongoing transformation in the job market due to automation and artificial intelligence. While politicians may rally around populist promises to protect existing jobs, they frequently neglect the broader implications of these technological advancements. Reports indicate that millions of jobs are at risk of being displaced by AI, yet discussions on how to adapt the workforce for this new reality remain scant. For instance, instead of investing in retraining programs or education reform that prepares workers for the jobs of tomorrow, many politicians cling to outdated models of employment that may no longer be viable. This disconnect highlights the urgent need for a proactive approach that embraces change rather than resisting it.

Moreover, social issues such as climate change and public health are also deserving of greater attention. As the world grapples with extreme weather events and the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the urgency for comprehensive policies that address these challenges has never been greater. Yet, populist narratives often distract from the necessary long-term solutions that require cooperation and strategic planning. For example, instead of focusing on divisive topics, leaders could prioritize sustainable practices and investments in green technology that not only address environmental concerns but also create new job opportunities. By shifting the focus from populist rhetoric to substantive policy discussions, politicians can better serve their constituents and foster a more resilient society.

As politicians debate populist schemes, they ignore impactful changes in plain sight
