Ukraine must change how it is governed, writes a former adviser

By Eric November 27, 2025

In a recent commentary, Alexander Rodnyansky, a prominent figure in Russian politics and economics, expressed deep concerns regarding the alarming concentration of power within the presidential office in Russia. Rodnyansky, who has previously served as an advisor to the Russian government and has been a vocal critic of the current political climate, argues that this centralization undermines democratic processes and stifles the diverse voices that are essential for a healthy political environment. He highlights how the current regime, led by President Vladimir Putin, has systematically eroded checks and balances, consolidating authority in a way that limits accountability and transparency.

Rodnyansky points out that the concentration of power has led to a significant decline in civil liberties and political pluralism. For instance, he notes that independent media outlets have faced increasing pressure, with many being forced to shut down or operate under stringent regulations. This has created a media landscape dominated by state-controlled narratives, leaving little room for dissenting opinions. Furthermore, he emphasizes that this political environment discourages public participation and civic engagement, as citizens feel disillusioned and powerless in the face of an overpowering executive branch. Rodnyansky calls for a reinvigoration of democratic institutions and a rebalancing of power that would allow for a more inclusive political discourse, essential for the country’s long-term stability and prosperity.

In his critique, Rodnyansky also draws parallels with historical examples of authoritarian regimes where power was similarly concentrated, warning that such trajectories often lead to social unrest and economic stagnation. He argues that for Russia to thrive, it must embrace a more decentralized approach to governance that empowers local authorities and civil society. By fostering an environment where diverse opinions can flourish and where citizens can actively participate in shaping their governance, Rodnyansky believes Russia can pave the way for a more democratic future. His insights serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding democratic principles and the need for a political landscape that reflects the voices of all citizens, not just those at the top.
