Junta hails end to US protected status for Myanmar nationals

By Eric November 27, 2025

In recent developments concerning Myanmar’s political crisis, human rights monitors have raised alarms about the safety of returning to the country, particularly in light of serious crimes reported in the lead-up to the elections. The situation in Myanmar remains dire, with ongoing violence and instability since the military coup in February 2021. These monitors emphasize that the conditions in Myanmar are not conducive for returnees, as the junta continues to perpetrate human rights violations against its citizens. Reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and widespread oppression have only intensified fears among those considering returning home.

Adding to the complexity of this situation, the Trump administration’s recent decision to halt a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for around 4,000 Myanmar citizens residing in the United States has drawn significant criticism. TPS is designed to protect individuals from deportation to their home countries during crises such as war, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. The cessation of this program means that these individuals, who have built lives in the U.S. and may have fled violence and persecution, now face the threat of deportation back to a country engulfed in turmoil. This decision has been met with dismay from human rights advocates, who argue that it disregards the precarious situation in Myanmar and places vulnerable individuals at further risk.

The implications of these actions are profound, as they not only affect the lives of the Myanmar citizens in the U.S. but also send a troubling message regarding international support for those fleeing oppressive regimes. As the junta continues to consolidate power and suppress dissent, the international community is urged to reconsider its stance on Myanmar and prioritize the safety and rights of its citizens, both at home and abroad. With the elections approaching and the situation remaining volatile, the need for a comprehensive humanitarian response has never been more critical.
