High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 27, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized the way we travel, proving their worth across the globe over the past 50 years. Originating in Japan with the Shinkansen in 1964, these trains have not only transformed transportation but also shaped economies and urban development. The Shinkansen, often referred to as the “bullet train,” was a groundbreaking innovation that set the stage for high-speed rail systems worldwide. Since then, countries like France, Spain, and China have embraced this technology, each developing their unique systems that cater to the needs of their populations. For instance, France’s TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) began operations in the 1980s and has become synonymous with speed and efficiency, connecting major cities like Paris and Lyon in just over two hours.

The benefits of high-speed trains extend beyond mere convenience; they foster economic growth and environmental sustainability. These trains significantly reduce travel time between urban centers, making it easier for people to commute for work or leisure. In Spain, the AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) network has not only linked cities but has also stimulated tourism and local economies by making destinations more accessible. Furthermore, high-speed trains offer a greener alternative to air travel, as they produce lower carbon emissions per passenger mile. Countries like Japan and France have demonstrated that investing in high-speed rail can lead to a more sustainable transportation infrastructure, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to the fight against climate change.

As we look to the future, the expansion of high-speed rail networks remains a focal point for many nations. In the United States, discussions around developing a high-speed rail system have gained traction, especially in regions like California, where plans for the California High-Speed Rail aim to connect major metropolitan areas. However, challenges such as funding, regulatory hurdles, and public support persist. Meanwhile, countries like China have taken the lead, boasting the world’s largest high-speed rail network, which continues to grow at an astonishing pace. As we witness the evolution of high-speed trains, it is clear that they have become an integral part of modern transportation, shaping not just how we travel, but also how we connect with one another and our environment.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
