Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 27, 2025

In a recent update, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK reported a significant decrease in its waiting list, which now stands at 7.39 million patients, representing a reduction of 230,000 compared to July of the previous year. This decrease is a positive sign amid ongoing challenges faced by the health service, particularly as it braces for an influx of demand during the winter months. The NHS has seen a drop of 15,845 patients on the waiting list since August, indicating some progress in managing backlogs that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent strains on healthcare resources.

However, the NHS is not without its challenges. As winter approaches, emergency departments (A&E) and ambulance services are experiencing record-high demand, raising concerns about the capacity of the health service to cope with the anticipated surge in patients. Health officials have warned that the NHS is approaching its operational limits, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to improve patient care and reduce waiting times further. The situation is particularly critical given the seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses, which typically strains healthcare services during colder months.

The ongoing improvements in waiting times could be attributed to various factors, including enhanced resource allocation and targeted initiatives aimed at streamlining patient care pathways. Nevertheless, the NHS must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the underlying issues that contribute to long waiting lists, such as staffing shortages and increased patient complexity. As the winter season looms, the focus will be on ensuring that the NHS can effectively balance the reduction in waiting lists with the urgent demands placed on its services, ultimately aiming to provide timely and effective care to all patients.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
