Trump Administration Will No Longer Commemorate World AIDS Day

By Eric November 27, 2025

On December 1, 2024, the South Lawn of the White House became a poignant gathering place as President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted a special event to commemorate World AIDS Day. This annual observance, which takes place on the first day of December, aims to raise awareness about the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS, honor those who have lost their lives to the disease, and celebrate advancements in treatment and prevention. The 2024 event was particularly significant, marking over four decades since the first cases of AIDS were reported in the United States, a period that has seen both devastating losses and remarkable progress in medical science and public health policy.

During the ceremony, President Biden emphasized the importance of continued efforts to combat stigma and ensure access to healthcare for all individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to increasing funding for research, prevention, and treatment initiatives, as well as the importance of global cooperation in addressing this health crisis. The event featured powerful speeches from HIV activists, survivors, and healthcare professionals, who shared personal stories and underscored the need for ongoing advocacy. For instance, one speaker recounted their journey of living with HIV, illustrating the profound impact of antiretroviral therapy that has transformed the prognosis for many living with the virus today.

In addition to the speeches, the event served as a platform for announcing new initiatives aimed at reducing new HIV infections by 75% over the next decade. The Biden administration’s ambitious plan includes expanding access to PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and increasing funding for community-based organizations that provide essential services to at-risk populations. As part of the observance, the White House also unveiled a new campaign to encourage regular testing and treatment adherence, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in ending the epidemic. The gathering underscored the resilience of the HIV/AIDS community and the collective commitment to fighting this public health challenge, reminding attendees and viewers alike that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done in the quest for a world free of HIV/AIDS.
