Millions of UK Apple users could get pay-out after court ruling

By Eric October 27, 2025

In a significant legal development, millions of UK consumers who purchased apps through Apple’s App Store may soon be eligible to claim damages, following a ruling by the Competition Appeal Tribunal. The tribunal has allowed a group of claimants to proceed with a class action lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the tech giant imposed unfair charges on app purchases, leading to inflated prices for consumers. The lawsuit, spearheaded by consumer rights advocate Justin Gutmann, argues that Apple’s policies, particularly its 30% commission on app sales, violate competition laws and have resulted in excessive costs for users. This ruling opens the door for an estimated 19 million app purchasers in the UK to potentially receive compensation, which could amount to around £1.5 billion.

Apple, however, has expressed its intention to appeal the tribunal’s decision, asserting that the claims lack merit and that the company has operated within the legal framework. The tech giant argues that its App Store provides a secure and reliable platform for developers and consumers alike, and that the fees associated with app sales are justified by the services it offers. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications not only for Apple but also for how digital marketplaces operate in the UK and beyond. As the legal battle unfolds, consumers and developers alike are watching closely, as the potential for significant financial compensation could reshape the landscape of app purchasing and digital commerce.

The case underscores a growing concern over the power and practices of major tech companies, particularly in how they manage their marketplaces and interact with consumers. If the appeal does not succeed, it may set a precedent for similar lawsuits against other tech giants, potentially leading to a re-evaluation of commission structures across various platforms. As the digital economy continues to expand, the outcome of this lawsuit could pave the way for greater transparency and fairness in app pricing, benefiting consumers and encouraging competition in the tech industry.
