Is now really the time to approve higher pay for Cal State executives?

By Eric November 27, 2025

In a recent letter to the editor published by the Los Angeles Times, a reader critically responded to the remarks made by California State University (CSU) Chancellor Mildred García regarding the need to attract and retain a skilled, diverse, and engaged workforce. García’s statement underscores an urgent call for institutions to evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of higher education and labor markets. However, the reader raises a poignant concern: her emphasis on workforce retention seems to disproportionately focus on higher-paid employees, particularly those earning salaries well into the six figures, leaving behind lower-paid staff who are equally essential to the university’s operations and success.

The reader’s critique highlights a growing disparity within educational institutions, where the needs and contributions of lower-wage employees, such as administrative staff, custodians, and support personnel, are often overlooked. While García’s intentions may be to enhance the university’s overall effectiveness and appeal, the reality is that a diverse workforce encompasses all levels of employment, not just those in leadership or high-salary positions. This disparity raises questions about equity and inclusivity within the CSU system, as lower-wage employees often face challenges such as job insecurity, limited benefits, and insufficient recognition for their contributions to the university community.

The conversation initiated by this letter is particularly relevant in the context of ongoing discussions about wage equity and workplace diversity across various sectors. As institutions like CSU strive to create an inclusive environment, it is crucial that they not only attract high-skilled talent but also invest in the well-being and development of all employees. By fostering a more equitable workplace that values every role, CSU can truly embody the spirit of diversity and engagement that Chancellor García advocates for, ensuring a thriving educational ecosystem that benefits the entire community.

‘CSU Chancellor Mildred García said, “we must keep pace to attract and retain a skilled, diverse and engaged workforce.” It is a shame that her words seemingly only apply to employees making salaries well into the six figures,’ writes an L.A. Times reader.
