Obamacare Prices Become Public, Highlighting Big Increases

By Eric November 26, 2025

On Saturday, Americans will have the opportunity to begin selecting their health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for the upcoming year. This marks the start of the annual open enrollment period, which runs from November 1 to December 15, 2023. During this time, individuals and families can shop for health insurance plans that best meet their needs, comparing different options based on coverage, premiums, and out-of-pocket costs. Ahead of this official enrollment period, the public has been given access to a “window shopping” phase where they can view prices and plan details without committing to any plan. This allows potential enrollees to assess their options and make informed decisions when the enrollment period officially opens.

The window shopping period is particularly important as it provides an opportunity for consumers to familiarize themselves with the available plans and their costs. For example, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has reported that many Americans may find lower premiums this year, thanks in part to enhanced subsidies that make coverage more affordable. In fact, the average monthly premium for a benchmark plan is projected to decrease, potentially benefiting millions of enrollees. Consumers can also explore various plan types, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), and exclusive provider networks, which can offer different levels of flexibility and cost-sharing.

It is essential for consumers to pay attention to the details of each plan, as not all plans are created equal. Coverage for essential health benefits, such as preventive services, prescription drugs, and mental health services, can vary significantly. Additionally, individuals should consider their healthcare needs, including any ongoing treatments or medications, when selecting a plan. The ACA has made strides in expanding access to healthcare, and with the open enrollment period upon us, now is the time for Americans to take charge of their health insurance choices for 2024. With the right information and preparation, consumers can navigate the complexities of health insurance and secure a plan that offers both coverage and affordability.

On Saturday, Americans can begin selecting their Obamacare plans for next year. Until then, the public prices are available for a so-called window shopping period.
