Asia’s most treacherous sailing season

By Eric November 25, 2025

In recent months, the plight of Rohingya refugees has intensified as they embark on perilous sea journeys in search of safety and a better life. Fleeing violence, persecution, and dire living conditions in Myanmar and refugee camps in Bangladesh, many Rohingya are forced to take to overcrowded, unseaworthy boats, risking their lives on treacherous waters. Reports indicate that these crossings have become increasingly deadly, with many refugees succumbing to the harsh elements, starvation, or capsizing incidents. The United Nations has highlighted that at least 100 Rohingya have died or gone missing this year alone while attempting to reach countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, which are seen as potential havens.

The desperation driving these dangerous crossings stems from the Rohingya’s long history of discrimination and violence. Following a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar in 2017, over 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh, where they now live in overcrowded and unsanitary refugee camps. With limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, many refugees see no viable alternative but to risk the perilous journey across the Bay of Bengal. Human traffickers often exploit these vulnerable individuals, charging exorbitant fees for dangerous boat rides, and reports of abuse and exploitation are rampant. For many, the sea represents a final chance for freedom and a life without fear, even if it means facing the unknown.

While countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have shown some willingness to accept Rohingya refugees, the response remains inconsistent and often fraught with political challenges. The international community has been urged to take action to address the root causes of the Rohingya crisis and provide more robust support for those fleeing violence. As the situation continues to evolve, the world watches in concern, hoping for a resolution that will allow the Rohingya to live in safety and dignity rather than resorting to life-threatening journeys across dangerous seas. The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for global solidarity and humanitarian assistance to protect one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.
