US warns Russia not to touch American nuclear technology at Ukrainian nuclear plant

By Eric November 25, 2025

In a significant development regarding nuclear safety amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the U.S. Department of Energy has issued a stern warning to Russia about sensitive nuclear technology housed at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine. In a letter addressed to Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company, the U.S. emphasized the critical nature of this technology and the potential consequences of any interference or aggression towards it. This warning underscores the heightened tensions surrounding nuclear facilities in the region, particularly as military activities continue to pose risks to safety and security.

The letter reflects growing concerns over the safety of nuclear power plants in Ukraine, which have been under threat due to the ongoing war. Ukraine is home to several nuclear facilities, including the notorious Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been a focal point of international scrutiny since it was occupied by Russian forces. The U.S. government is particularly wary of any actions that could jeopardize the integrity of these facilities, given the catastrophic potential of nuclear accidents. The sensitive technology mentioned in the letter likely pertains to advanced systems that could be used for both civilian energy production and military applications, raising the stakes for both nations involved.

This warning is not merely a diplomatic gesture; it reflects the serious implications of nuclear safety in a conflict zone. The U.S. has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that nuclear technology does not fall into the wrong hands or is used irresponsibly. As the conflict continues, the potential for miscalculation or accidents at these nuclear sites remains a pressing concern for both regional stability and global security. The international community is watching closely, as any incident could have far-reaching consequences, not only for Ukraine and Russia but for the entire world.

The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy sent to Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy firm Rosatom last month.
