These ships disappeared in Lake Superior a century ago. Watch as they’re found again
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has made significant strides in maritime archaeology by discovering two of the three ships that sank during a devastating storm on Lake Superior over a century ago. The storm, which occurred in November 1905, is infamous for its ferocity, claiming the lives of 29 sailors and leading to the loss of multiple vessels. Among the ships lost during this catastrophic event were the SS Edwin H. Gott, the SS H. Lee, and the SS H.C. Houghton. The GLSHS’s efforts to locate these wrecks have not only shed light on this historical maritime tragedy but also highlighted the importance of preserving and studying shipwrecks as part of our cultural heritage.
In 2021, the society successfully located the wreck of the SS H.C. Houghton, which was found at a depth of approximately 600 feet. This discovery was celebrated not only for its historical significance but also for the advanced technology employed in the search, including sonar imaging and underwater remotely operated vehicles. The following year, in 2022, the GLSHS uncovered the wreck of the SS Edwin H. Gott, which lies at a similar depth. These discoveries have provided valuable insights into the construction and operation of early 20th-century vessels, as well as the conditions sailors faced during that perilous storm. The society’s ongoing research aims to further understand the circumstances surrounding these shipwrecks and the broader implications of maritime safety and navigation during that era.
The search for the remaining ship, the SS H. Lee, continues, as the GLSHS remains committed to uncovering the full story of this tragic maritime event. The organization emphasizes the importance of educating the public about maritime history and the need for preservation efforts. The discoveries of the H.C. Houghton and the Edwin H. Gott serve as poignant reminders of the risks faced by sailors on the Great Lakes and the enduring legacy of those who lost their lives in the storm. As the GLSHS continues its work, it invites the public to engage with this rich history, fostering a deeper appreciation for the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes.
