China has too many university grads and too few jobs for them

By Eric November 23, 2025

In a significant shift in educational policy, the government is advocating for a greater emphasis on vocational training for young people, steering them away from traditional academic routes. This initiative comes in response to a growing recognition of the skills gap in the labor market, where many industries are struggling to find qualified workers. By promoting vocational colleges, the government aims to equip students with practical skills that are directly applicable in various trades and professions, thereby addressing both the needs of the economy and the aspirations of the youth.

The push towards vocational education is underscored by several key statistics. For instance, recent reports indicate that over 50% of employers in sectors such as construction, healthcare, and technology are facing difficulties in filling skilled positions. In contrast, many recent graduates from traditional universities find themselves underemployed or struggling to find jobs that match their degrees. This disconnect highlights the need for a re-evaluation of educational pathways, with vocational training emerging as a viable alternative that not only prepares students for immediate employment but also offers long-term career prospects.

To facilitate this transition, the government is implementing several supportive measures, including increased funding for vocational programs, partnerships with local businesses for apprenticeships, and awareness campaigns to change societal perceptions about vocational education. For example, initiatives are being launched to showcase success stories of individuals who have thrived in their careers after attending vocational colleges. By illustrating the tangible benefits of vocational training, such as higher employment rates and competitive salaries, the government hopes to inspire more young people to consider these pathways as legitimate and rewarding options. As this movement gains momentum, it could reshape the future of education, creating a workforce that is better equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
