How did Sudan go from casting off despotic rule to this?

By Eric November 23, 2025

Four years ago, Sudan was a beacon of hope as citizens celebrated a revolution that successfully ousted longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled for three decades. This monumental shift was marked by widespread protests and a collective yearning for democracy, justice, and peace. The transitional government that emerged was initially seen as a promising step towards a more democratic future. However, the optimism has since faded, as the nation grapples with escalating violence, economic turmoil, and political instability. The current situation in Sudan is dire, with the potential for a complete collapse reminiscent of the ongoing crises in Yemen and Libya.

The situation has worsened dramatically due to internal conflicts, particularly the power struggle between military factions and civilian leaders. The military coup in October 2021 disrupted the fragile transition, leading to increased violence and civil unrest. Reports indicate that clashes between rival military groups have escalated, resulting in significant civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis. The economy, already fragile, has been further strained, with skyrocketing inflation and shortages of essential goods, leaving many Sudanese citizens struggling to meet basic needs. International observers warn that without urgent intervention, Sudan could descend into a state of chaos, similar to the protracted conflicts seen in neighboring countries.

As Sudan stands on the brink of collapse, the international community faces pressing questions about how to respond effectively. Aid organizations are sounding the alarm about the humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of assistance. The situation calls for a concerted effort to restore stability, promote dialogue among conflicting parties, and support the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democracy and peace. The lessons learned from other regions in turmoil underscore the importance of a united and proactive approach to prevent Sudan from becoming another failed state in a region already plagued by instability.

Four years ago, almost to the day, the people of Sudan were celebrating a revolution after overthrowing longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir. Now the East African country faces the possibility of a complete collapse similar to the chaos we see today in Yemen or Libya.
