How to lower America’s soaring health-care costs

By Eric November 22, 2025

In a political landscape increasingly dominated by populist rhetoric, the focus of many politicians seems to be shifting towards appealing to immediate public sentiments rather than addressing more profound, systemic issues that require long-term solutions. This trend is evident as politicians propose flashy, short-term schemes designed to capture votes rather than implementing impactful policies that could foster sustainable growth and development. For instance, while debates around universal basic income and debt relief capture headlines and public attention, they often overshadow critical discussions about infrastructure investment, climate change mitigation, and education reform—issues that could yield significant benefits over time.

One glaring example of this oversight is the ongoing infrastructure crisis in many countries, where aging roads, bridges, and public transportation systems are in dire need of repair and modernization. Instead of prioritizing comprehensive infrastructure plans that could create jobs and stimulate local economies, politicians are more inclined to promote quick fixes or populist giveaways that resonate on a surface level but fail to address the underlying problems. Furthermore, as the climate crisis intensifies, the urgency for innovative solutions to transition to renewable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions is paramount. However, these critical conversations are often sidelined in favor of more sensationalist policies that promise immediate relief but lack the depth necessary for real change.

Moreover, the focus on populist schemes often leads to a neglect of the voices of experts and stakeholders who understand the complexities of these issues. Policymakers may prioritize popular opinion over empirical evidence, resulting in decisions that may not align with the best interests of the public in the long run. For example, while the idea of debt forgiveness for students resonates with many, it may distract from the need for comprehensive reforms in the education system that address the root causes of high tuition costs and student debt. As the political discourse continues to evolve, it is crucial for leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the pressing issues at hand, moving beyond populist soundbites to implement policies that are not only popular but also effective and sustainable for future generations.

As politicians debate populist schemes, they ignore impactful changes in plain sight
