Marjorie Taylor Greene announces resignation from Congress after President Trump withdraws endorsement

By Eric November 22, 2025

In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) announced her resignation from Congress, effective January 5, 2026. This decision comes just a week after former President Donald Trump publicly withdrew his endorsement of Greene, labeling her as “Wacky” and a “ranting lunatic.” In her lengthy statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Greene expressed her growing disillusionment with the political landscape in Washington, criticizing what she termed the “Political Industrial Complex.” She argued that both major political parties manipulate the American public, fostering division and failing to deliver meaningful improvements for everyday citizens. “Americans are used by the Political Industrial Complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle,” Greene lamented, emphasizing her belief that the ongoing cycle of hatred between the parties only benefits the political elite while leaving the common person behind.

Greene’s resignation marks a significant moment, particularly as she has been a polarizing figure within the Republican Party and a staunch supporter of Trump. In her announcement, she stated that she has “never fit in” in Washington and intends to continue her fight for the American people outside of Congress. She reiterated her commitment to term limits and criticized the current GOP leadership for being preoccupied with re-election rather than addressing substantive issues. Greene highlighted her legislative efforts that have gone unrecognized, including proposals to make English the official language of the U.S., criminalize gender-transition procedures for minors, and eliminate H-1B visas. She expressed frustration that her bills, along with those of many other Congress members, “just sit collecting dust” without ever being brought to a vote.

The political ramifications of Greene’s departure are significant, especially in Georgia’s 14th District, which is considered a stronghold for Republicans. Her resignation will trigger a special election, opening the door for potential challengers and shifting the dynamics within the party. Greene’s acknowledgment of the hurt caused by Trump’s withdrawal of support reveals the complexities of loyalty and political alliances in the current Republican landscape. Despite the upheaval, Greene remains steadfast in her convictions, asserting that her self-worth is defined by her faith rather than her political affiliations. As the story develops, the impact of her resignation on both her constituents and the Republican Party will be closely watched.

Congress
, one week after President
Donald Trump
publicly pulled his endorsement of the outspoken Georgia lawmaker.
In a
lengthy statement posted to X
, Greene cited her growing disillusionment with Washington politics, blasting what she called a corrupt “Political Industrial Complex” that she said uses Americans as “pawns in an endless game of division.”
“Americans are used by the Political Industrial Complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle, in order to elect whichever side can convince Americans to hate the other side more,” Greene wrote. “And the results are always the same — nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman.”

Greene said she had “never fit in” in Washington and was leaving Congress to “fight for the people of this country in a different way.”
“I believe in term limits and do not think Congress should be a lifelong career or an assisted living facility,” Greene wrote. “My only goal and desire has ever been to hold the
Republican Party
accountable for the promises it makes to the American people and put America First, and I have fought against Democrat’s damaging policies like the Green New Deal, wide open deadly unsafe border policies, and the trans agenda on children and against women.”
Greene criticized her own party’s leadership for what she called a “sidelined” majority more focused on “safe campaign re-election mode” than governing.

Greene, once one of President Trump’s fiercest defenders, acknowledged that his recent public break was “hurtful” but said her faith and convictions remain intact.
“My heart remains filled with joy, my life is filled with happiness, and my true convictions remain unchanged because my self worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God who created everything in existence,” she wrote.
“I will be resigning from office with my last day being January 5, 2026,” she wrote. “I’m going back to the people I love.”
With Greene’s resignation, a special election will be triggered in Georgia’s 14th district, which the
