Records: WMU police called twice to aid Kneeland

By Eric November 22, 2025

In a troubling turn of events, Western Michigan University police conducted two welfare checks on former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland during his tenure with the school. Kneeland, who played for the Broncos after being signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, faced significant challenges that prompted these interventions. The welfare checks, which are typically initiated when there are concerns about an individual’s well-being, highlight the ongoing struggles that many athletes face, both on and off the field.

The first welfare check reportedly occurred in early October 2022, following concerns raised by Kneeland’s teammates and coaches about his emotional state and overall health. These checks are crucial as they aim to ensure the safety and mental well-being of individuals who may be experiencing distress. Kneeland’s situation underscores the importance of mental health awareness in sports, where athletes often grapple with immense pressure to perform while also dealing with personal issues. The second check took place later in the season, further illustrating the ongoing nature of Kneeland’s struggles during his time at Western Michigan University.

Kneeland’s case is a poignant reminder of the need for comprehensive mental health support systems within collegiate athletics. The pressures of competing at a high level, coupled with personal challenges, can lead to a precarious situation for young athletes. As universities and sports organizations increasingly recognize the importance of mental health, it is imperative that they provide adequate resources and support for athletes like Kneeland, who may be silently battling their demons. This incident not only sheds light on Kneeland’s individual experience but also serves as a call to action for better mental health resources in sports programs nationwide.
