Asia’s most treacherous sailing season

By Eric November 22, 2025

In recent months, the plight of Rohingya refugees has taken a harrowing turn as thousands embark on perilous sea journeys in search of safety and a better life, often risking their lives in the process. Fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar, many Rohingya have turned to overcrowded and unseaworthy boats to escape to neighboring countries like Malaysia and Thailand. Reports indicate that these dangerous crossings have resulted in numerous tragedies, with many refugees drowning or going missing at sea. Humanitarian organizations have highlighted the desperate circumstances driving these individuals to such extreme measures, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention and support.

The Rohingya community has faced systemic discrimination and violence for decades, culminating in a brutal military crackdown in 2017 that forced over 700,000 to flee to Bangladesh. While many have found temporary refuge in sprawling camps in Cox’s Bazar, the conditions remain dire, with limited access to basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and education. As desperation mounts, smuggling networks have proliferated, exploiting the vulnerabilities of the refugees. Survivors of these treacherous journeys recount harrowing tales of overcrowded vessels, insufficient supplies, and the constant threat of violence from smugglers or authorities. Tragically, some do not survive the journey, underscoring the dire need for sustainable solutions to address the root causes of the Rohingya crisis and protect those fleeing persecution.

International organizations continue to call for increased humanitarian aid and a reassessment of policies affecting the Rohingya. There is a pressing need for countries in the region to collaborate on a comprehensive response that prioritizes the safety and dignity of refugees. As the world watches, the Rohingya’s struggle for survival on the high seas serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for global solidarity and action to ensure their rights and safety are upheld.
