At Saudi Behest, Trump Vows to Seek Peace in Sudan, a Goal He Had Spurned

By Eric November 21, 2025

In March 2023, the ongoing conflict in Sudan reached a critical point as the Sudanese military managed to reclaim significant territory in Khartoum from the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This escalation of violence left the capital’s airport in a state of devastation, littered with the wreckage of downed planes, highlighting the severe impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure and the broader humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. The clashes between the military and the RSF, which began in April 2023, have resulted in widespread destruction and a dire need for humanitarian assistance as thousands of residents flee the violence.

The conflict has deep roots in Sudan’s complex political landscape, where power struggles between military factions and various political groups have long plagued the nation. The RSF, originally formed from militias involved in the Darfur conflict, has grown in strength and influence, challenging the military’s authority. The recent military offensive to retake control of Khartoum was marked by fierce fighting, resulting in significant casualties and further destabilizing the already fragile state. As the military sought to reassert its dominance, the consequences for civilians were dire, with reports of airstrikes and heavy artillery fire leading to mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis that has drawn international concern.

In the wake of the violence, humanitarian organizations have been struggling to provide aid to those affected. The destruction of the airport not only impeded the delivery of essential supplies but also signaled a troubling escalation in the conflict, as vital transportation routes became battlegrounds. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community is urged to respond to the urgent needs of the Sudanese people, who are caught in the crossfire of a power struggle that threatens to plunge the nation into further chaos. The wreckage at Khartoum’s airport serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for a resolution to restore peace and stability in Sudan.

After the Sudanese military retook part of Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces, the military section capital’s airport in was strewed with plane wreckage in March.
