Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 21, 2025

The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK has reported a notable reduction in its waiting list, which now stands at approximately 7.39 million patients as of September, reflecting a decrease of 230,000 compared to the same month last year. This decline, which translates to about 6.24 million patients, marks a positive shift in the ongoing efforts to manage healthcare demands amidst the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this reduction is encouraging, it comes at a time when the NHS is grappling with record demand for Accident & Emergency (A&E) services and ambulance responses, as the health service braces itself for the winter months, traditionally a peak period for health issues.

Despite the drop in waiting times, the NHS is reportedly nearing its operational limits. The rise in demand for emergency services has led to increased pressure on healthcare professionals, with many A&E departments experiencing overcrowding and ambulances facing longer response times. For instance, recent statistics indicate that patient wait times for treatment in A&E have surged, with many individuals waiting hours beyond the recommended timeframes. This situation is compounded by seasonal illnesses that typically arise during winter, such as flu and respiratory infections, which further strain the already stretched resources of the NHS.

The government and health officials are actively seeking solutions to alleviate these pressures, focusing on increasing staffing levels and enhancing service efficiency. Initiatives aimed at streamlining patient care and improving access to services are crucial as the NHS aims to ensure that the progress made in reducing waiting lists is not overshadowed by the impending winter challenges. As the nation looks ahead, the balance between managing existing patient needs and preparing for seasonal surges remains a critical focus for the NHS, highlighting the importance of ongoing support and investment in public health services.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
