Google steps up AI scam protection in India, but gaps remain

By Eric November 21, 2025

Google has announced a significant expansion of its real-time scam-detection features and screen-sharing fraud warnings in India, a move aimed at bolstering user security in a country that has seen a surge in online scams. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms for banking, shopping, and communication, cybercriminals are exploiting vulnerabilities to defraud unsuspecting users. Recognizing this alarming trend, Google is enhancing its existing security measures to provide greater protection for Indian users against various types of online fraud.

The new features will leverage advanced machine learning algorithms to detect potential scams in real time, alerting users before they fall victim to fraudulent activities. For instance, if a user receives a suspicious call or message that appears to be from a legitimate source, Google’s system will analyze the communication and provide warnings if it identifies any red flags. This proactive approach aims to empower users with the information they need to make informed decisions and avoid scams. Additionally, the screen-sharing fraud warnings will notify users if they are engaging in a session that could lead to unauthorized access to their personal information, a common tactic used by scammers in India.

Google’s initiative comes in response to a growing number of reports regarding online fraud in the country, particularly during the pandemic when digital transactions surged. According to a recent report, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) noted a significant increase in cybercrime complaints, with many cases involving phishing attacks and fraudulent calls. By expanding its scam-detection capabilities, Google not only aims to protect its users but also to foster a safer online environment in India. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to user security and trust, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding personal information in an increasingly digital world.
