High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 20, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation over the past 50 years, demonstrating their efficiency and effectiveness in connecting cities and enhancing economic growth. Originating in Japan with the Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” which began operations in 1964, high-speed rail (HSR) has since expanded globally, with countries like France, Spain, and China investing heavily in their rail networks. These trains, capable of reaching speeds over 300 km/h (186 mph), have not only reduced travel times significantly—making intercity journeys faster and more convenient—but have also provided an environmentally friendly alternative to air travel. For instance, a trip from Paris to Lyon that once took about 4 hours by car can now be completed in just over 2 hours by TGV, France’s high-speed train.

The adoption of high-speed rail has yielded various economic and social benefits. Cities connected by HSR have seen a boost in tourism and business travel, as people find it easier and more appealing to visit neighboring regions. In Spain, the AVE train system has transformed the travel landscape, linking major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, and contributing to a significant rise in domestic tourism. In addition to economic advantages, high-speed trains offer a more sustainable mode of transport compared to cars and planes, reducing carbon emissions and alleviating congestion on roadways and at airports. China has emerged as a leader in high-speed rail, boasting the largest network in the world, which has not only improved domestic connectivity but also stimulated urban development along its routes.

As countries continue to recognize the importance of efficient transportation infrastructure, the future of high-speed rail looks promising. Investments in technology and infrastructure are expected to enhance the capabilities of HSR, making it an even more attractive option for travelers. Innovations such as magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, which can travel at speeds exceeding 600 km/h (373 mph), are on the horizon, promising to further transform the way we think about distance and travel. As urban areas become increasingly congested, high-speed trains could play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation, offering a viable solution to the challenges posed by modern mobility demands.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
