Asia’s most treacherous sailing season

By Eric November 19, 2025

In recent months, the plight of Rohingya refugees has taken a harrowing turn as many are risking their lives in dangerous sea crossings in search of safety and a better future. Fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar, these individuals embark on perilous journeys across the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, often crammed into overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels. Tragically, not all who attempt these treacherous crossings survive. Reports indicate that many boats have capsized, leading to a rising death toll among those seeking refuge. This desperate situation highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the Rohingya community, which has been subjected to systematic discrimination and violence for decades.

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group, have faced severe oppression in Myanmar, particularly during the military crackdown in 2017 that led to the mass exodus of over 700,000 people to neighboring Bangladesh. Conditions in refugee camps, such as those in Cox’s Bazar, remain dire, with overcrowding, limited access to healthcare, and inadequate food supplies exacerbating the suffering of these displaced individuals. As opportunities for legal migration dwindle and conditions in the camps remain bleak, many Rohingya are turning to dangerous sea routes as a last resort. Human traffickers often exploit their desperation, charging exorbitant fees for passage while putting them in life-threatening situations.

International organizations and humanitarian agencies are calling for urgent action to address the root causes of this crisis, urging governments to provide safe and legal pathways for Rohingya refugees. The need for a coordinated global response is critical, as the ongoing violence in Myanmar and the dire conditions in refugee camps continue to fuel this tragic cycle of perilous sea crossings. As the world watches, the resilience and determination of the Rohingya people remain evident, but so too does the urgent need for support and intervention to ensure their safety and dignity.
