X is down, along with a chunk of the internet

By Eric November 19, 2025

On Tuesday morning, a significant disruption swept across the internet, affecting numerous platforms, including X (formerly known as Twitter), due to a large-scale outage at Cloudflare. The incident began around 6:48 AM ET when Cloudflare acknowledged it was investigating a problem impacting multiple customers, resulting in widespread 500 errors. By 7:21 AM ET, the company reported that services were beginning to recover, although users might still experience higher-than-normal error rates as remediation efforts continued. The outage drew immediate attention, with users flocking to Downdetector to report issues on X, highlighting the interconnected nature of online services and the ripple effects such outages can create.

Cloudflare later provided further insights into the situation, revealing that they had detected a spike in unusual traffic to one of their services starting at 11:20 UTC. This surge in traffic was responsible for the errors experienced across their network. While the exact cause of this spike remains undetermined, Cloudflare assured users that they were fully engaged in resolving the issue and would investigate the underlying factors once normal operations were restored. They committed to providing updates on their status page and through their blog, emphasizing their dedication to transparency during such critical incidents. As this story continues to develop, it serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in our increasingly digital world, where a single service outage can have far-reaching consequences.
