Meta starts notifying Australian teens of account shutdowns as social media ban looms

By Eric November 19, 2025

In a significant move aimed at enhancing online safety for minors, Meta has announced that Australian users under the age of 16 will receive notifications regarding the deactivation of their Facebook and Instagram accounts. This initiative is in compliance with the Albanese government’s recent social media ban, which seeks to protect young users from potential online harms. Starting Thursday, affected users will receive a combination of in-app messages, emails, and SMS alerts, providing them with a 14-day notice period before their accounts are officially deactivated on December 10. This proactive approach reflects a growing global concern over the impact of social media on youth mental health and well-being.

The decision to impose this ban comes as part of broader efforts by the Australian government to regulate social media platforms and ensure a safer online environment for children. By restricting access to these widely used platforms, authorities aim to mitigate risks associated with cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and other online dangers that can adversely affect young users. Meta’s compliance with this legislation highlights the increasing pressure on social media companies to take responsibility for the safety of their younger audiences. As the deadline approaches, it will be crucial to observe how this policy impacts not only the affected users but also the overall discourse surrounding digital safety and the role of social media in the lives of young Australians.
