NHS England responds to ADHD Taskforce final report

By Eric November 18, 2025

On November 6, 2025, an independent taskforce dedicated to addressing the myriad challenges faced by individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) released its comprehensive final report. This document provides a critical assessment of ADHD services spanning various sectors, including health, education, employment, and the criminal justice system. The taskforce’s findings reveal a concerning landscape: services nationwide are grappling with considerable strain, exacerbated by a lack of resources, inadequate training for professionals, and systemic barriers that hinder effective care and support for those affected by ADHD.

The report highlights several key issues, including the alarming rates of misdiagnosis and the insufficient availability of timely interventions. For instance, in the education sector, many teachers report feeling ill-equipped to support students with ADHD due to a lack of training and resources, leading to negative academic outcomes and increased behavioral issues. In the realm of employment, individuals with ADHD often face discrimination and misunderstandings about their capabilities, which can hinder their career prospects and contribute to higher rates of unemployment. Furthermore, the report underscores the troubling intersection of ADHD with the criminal justice system, where individuals with ADHD are disproportionately represented, often due to unmet needs and a lack of appropriate support services.

To address these pressing challenges, the taskforce has proposed a series of actionable recommendations aimed at improving ADHD care across all sectors. These include enhancing training for educators and healthcare professionals, increasing funding for ADHD services, and fostering greater collaboration between sectors to create a more integrated approach to care. By implementing these recommendations, the taskforce aims to ensure that individuals with ADHD receive the comprehensive support they need to thrive, ultimately leading to better outcomes in their education, employment, and overall quality of life. The final report serves as a crucial call to action for policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers to prioritize ADHD care and work collaboratively to dismantle the barriers that individuals with ADHD face in their everyday lives.
