What to Know About Teen Sexual Development and S.S.R.I.s

By Eric November 18, 2025

In recent years, the conversation surrounding mental health has expanded to include the effects of antidepressants on various aspects of life, including emerging sexuality. Despite the increasing prevalence of antidepressant prescriptions, particularly among younger populations, there remains a significant gap in research specifically examining how these medications influence sexual development and expression. This lack of understanding is particularly concerning given that emerging adulthood is a crucial period for exploring and establishing one’s sexual identity.

Current knowledge suggests that antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can have varying effects on sexual function. While some individuals may experience a decrease in libido or difficulties with arousal and orgasm, others report no significant changes or even improvements in their sexual experiences as their mood stabilizes. For instance, a study highlighted that while SSRIs can lead to sexual side effects in some patients, these effects are not universally experienced and can differ based on individual circumstances, including the type of antidepressant used, dosage, and personal health factors. Additionally, the emotional stability gained from effective antidepressant treatment may enhance sexual relationships, contributing to a more positive sexual experience overall.

As we delve deeper into this uncharted territory, it becomes increasingly clear that more comprehensive research is needed to fully understand the implications of antidepressant use on emerging sexuality. This includes exploring how these medications affect sexual desire, identity formation, and interpersonal relationships among young adults. By bridging this research gap, healthcare providers can better inform patients about the potential sexual side effects of antidepressants and help them navigate their sexual health in the context of mental wellness. Ultimately, fostering an open dialogue about these issues will empower individuals to make informed choices regarding their mental health and sexual well-being.

There is basically no research that looks at the impact of antidepressants on emerging sexuality. Here are the key things we do know.
