What Are Antidepressants Doing to Teen Sexual Development

By Eric November 18, 2025

Recent research has highlighted a significant concern regarding the impact of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on sexual desire in adults, revealing that these commonly prescribed antidepressants can dampen libido and sexual function. SSRIs, which are often used to treat depression and anxiety disorders, have been shown to produce side effects that may include reduced sexual desire, delayed orgasm, and erectile dysfunction. While this phenomenon has been well-documented in adult populations, there is a conspicuous gap in research concerning adolescents who are also prescribed these medications. Given the unique developmental stage of adolescence, where sexual identity and relationships are forming, the implications of SSRIs on young people’s sexual health and overall well-being warrant urgent attention.

The lack of focus on adolescents raises several critical questions. For instance, how might the suppression of sexual desire affect the emotional and social development of teenagers already facing the complexities of growing up? Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of medications that alter their emotional and physical experiences. The potential for SSRIs to interfere with natural sexual development could lead to long-term consequences, including issues with self-esteem, relationship dynamics, and mental health. Furthermore, as the prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents continues to rise, the increasing prescription of SSRIs for this age group necessitates a deeper understanding of their side effects.

Despite the evident need for research, there is a notable absence of comprehensive studies examining the sexual side effects of SSRIs in adolescents. This oversight could be attributed to ethical concerns about studying a vulnerable population, but it underscores the necessity for healthcare providers to consider the broader implications of prescribing these medications to young individuals. As mental health treatment becomes increasingly prioritized, it is crucial to ensure that adolescents receive holistic care that considers not only their emotional health but also their sexual health and development. Addressing these gaps in research could lead to better-informed treatment options and ultimately improve the quality of life for young patients navigating the complexities of both mental health and sexual development.

Research on adults who take S.S.R.I.s shows they tamp down sexual desire. Why aren’t we studying what that could mean for adolescents who take them?
