White homeowner accused of shooting a Black teen who rang his doorbell turns himself in to face criminal charges

By Eric November 18, 2025

In a tragic incident that has captured national attention, a 20-year-old woman named Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed after a friend mistakenly drove into the wrong driveway in upstate New York. The incident occurred on April 15, 2023, in the town of Hebron, when Gillis and her friends were attempting to locate another friend’s home. As they turned around in the driveway, the homeowner, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, allegedly fired two shots at the vehicle, striking Gillis, who was seated in the back. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the shooting, prompting an outpouring of grief and outrage from the community and beyond.

Gillis’ aunt, in a heart-wrenching statement, expressed the profound impact of the loss on their family, stating, “A major part of Ralph died,” referring to Gillis’ father. This sentiment underscores the deep emotional scars left by such senseless violence, especially against the backdrop of a growing national conversation about gun safety and the consequences of using firearms in non-threatening situations. The incident has reignited discussions around the “stand your ground” laws and the responsibilities of gun ownership, particularly as it relates to the defense of one’s property. Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held without bail, with his attorney arguing that he acted in self-defense.

This tragic event is part of a broader pattern of gun violence in the United States, where instances of individuals facing lethal consequences for minor mistakes have become alarmingly common. The shooting has resonated deeply with many, raising questions about societal norms regarding the use of force and the protection of personal property. As the community mourns the loss of Kaylin Gillis, her story serves as a painful reminder of the need for more comprehensive discussions about gun laws and the protection of innocent lives in everyday situations.
