High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 18, 2025

High-speed trains (HSTs) have revolutionized the way we travel, offering a fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to air and road transport. Over the past 50 years, these trains have gained traction globally, with countries like Japan, France, and China leading the charge in developing advanced rail networks. The Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” launched in Japan in 1964, set the standard for high-speed rail travel, achieving speeds of up to 320 km/h (200 mph). This pioneering service not only transformed domestic travel in Japan but also inspired numerous countries to invest in similar technologies, recognizing the potential for economic growth and reduced congestion.

In Europe, the introduction of the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) in France in the 1980s further showcased the advantages of high-speed rail. The TGV, which can reach speeds of 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) in test runs, has become a backbone of France’s transport infrastructure, connecting major cities like Paris, Lyon, and Marseille in record time. Moreover, the European Union has been actively promoting high-speed rail as a sustainable transport solution, emphasizing its role in reducing carbon emissions and alleviating traffic on congested highways and airports. The success of these systems has led to a surge in investment, with countries like Spain, Italy, and Germany developing their own high-speed networks, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth across the continent.

China, however, has taken the lead in the high-speed rail revolution, boasting the longest and fastest network in the world. Since the launch of its first high-speed train in 2007, China has rapidly expanded its rail network, covering over 38,000 kilometers (23,600 miles) and achieving speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph). This extensive network not only connects major urban centers but also plays a crucial role in bridging the rural-urban divide, providing access to remote areas and stimulating local economies. As high-speed trains continue to prove their worth worldwide, they are increasingly viewed as a vital component of modern transportation infrastructure, promising to enhance travel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to sustainable urban development for years to come.
